    For my Story 5, I am covering a story on retired police officers and their experiences in the work force. The purpose of this story will bring perspective to what police officers have gone through in their careers. All of these police officers play different roles in the police force, being fbi, ensurance work etc. The data analysis that I will provide with in this story will cover taxes on crimes commited in High Point.

    Recent crime in High Point involve the following. According to the High Point police department on November 28th, 2023 officers arrested a homicide suspect on Blair Avenue. On November 19th their was a traffic fatality in High Point. On November 15th a man with multiple arrests, was arrested for the ninth time in about six months. According to fox 8 news on November 28th 2023, a man was arrested on Blair avenue for a homicide. According to News Break on December 2nd 2023 their was a deadly shooting and propane tank explosion in High Point. According the High Point Enterprise their was larceny and theft on December 1st 2023, and an assault on November 30th 2023.

Retired Police And Their Experience In The Police Force

    Retired police now working for High Point Community Against Violence share their past experiences working in the High Point police force. 

Leonard Stump On Insurance Gone Wrong

Leonard Stump On Steps Taken To Stop Insurance Fraud 

     Stump works currently for the department of insurance covering 26 counties on insurance fraud, and is retired from the Guilford County Sherifs Office. He and his team cover automobile, medical, and homeowner insurance fraud. 

    Stump claims that his biggest case was post pandemic. "The insurance companies weren't sending their adjusters out," said Stump. "This person had a renters insurance fraud ring." 

    The guilty sent in a claim on their renters insurance, that their was a kitchen fire which wasn't true. The guilty was trying to recieve money from the government to cover damage that wasn't their. "The insurance company paid 510,000$ for damage that was a lie," said Stump.

Detective On Project X Catch A Predator

    In the early 2000's retired dectetive Jay Eaton covered a case where undercover officers on the dark web were posing as teenage boys and girls. "the premise was to catch the attention of child predators,"said Eaton.

    This undercover detective work led to the arrest of several child predators. Eaton was lead detective on one case that involved a soldier from Fort Brag. "The accused was talking online with who he thought was a 14 year old girl," said Eaton..."which eventually led to were going to meet up and have sex."

    The accused proceeded to drive to High Point from Fort Brag, where the sherifs office was waiting to make the arrest. "The accused was then taken to trial and found guilty," said Eaton. "That was rewarding for me knowing that we got this child predator off the street.

1980 Illegal Immigrant Ex Prisoners Make Way Into Our Country

    Retired law enforcement for deparment of Justice Victor Resto goes into further detail on a case in 1980 where 50,000 ex prisoner illegal immigrants made way into the US through the port of Miami. "Fidel Castro let them out of the prisons," said Resto. "They put them on boats and sent them to the United States." 

    The US prisons ended up with about 10,000 of these ex prisoners. "They were very cunning and manipulative," said Resto. 

    One prisoner escaped, from isolation. "crossed through the roofs of the buildings, and ended up on the ground," said Resto. The inmate then ended up in the Atlanta City. The police were able to bring this inmate back to the institution from Atlanta City.

Favorite Parts Of The Job 

     Eaton goes into further detail about his favorite parts of the police work he did. "As a detective theirs nothing better than getting the accused to admit what they did," said Eaton. He claims that it is the most challenging and rewarding part of the job.

     For my story 4 final Interviewed Patrick Welch from the High Point police station, and I also interviewed High Point Community Against Violence. For my story 5 I am going to interview retired police officers on the most interesting cases they have came across in the field they worked in. This story will maintain at least 4 retired officers. I will also be interviewing Patrick Welch again on cold cases that he has came across in his career. 

    The latest updates in High Point consist of traffic fatalities, and a teen motorcyclist dead in a crash. According to the High Point Police Department on November 19th "High Point Police, High Point Fire Department, and Guilford County EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Westchester Dr and N Main St for a traffic crash with injuries." According to fox8 on November 19th "Investigators say that a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck at the intersection." The driver of the motorcycle was 18 and died due to injuries upon arrival to the hospital. According to the High Point police department on November 22nd students gathered to design bowling pins for the High Point Police department angels in blue fundraiser. The angels in blue fundraiser rasies money for High Point families that are nominated for the community. They recieve gifts and donations through this fundraiser.

Keeping The Community Safe One Step

At A Time

       High Point Community Against Violence and The High Point Police Department strive to

keep the community safe through watchful eyes.

           Lutenient Patrick Welch further details how the police system works, and some recent violent

crime cases that have occured. Non profit organization HPCAV uses empathy to reach offendersof violent crime to get them to stop their ways.

      Lutenient of HPPDNC Welch goes into detail on violent crimes in High Point's community.

          

            According to Welch on October 5th their was a homicide in Westdale, "it started off as a

robbery/home invasion where they kindanapped individuals and brought them to High Point,"

Welch explained.

          One person was then shot at the scene, and they have made an arrest but are still looking into

others that were involved. Bobby Little one of the accused, had another first degree murder charge

on May 10th, 2022. "For a homicide that happened on N main street," Welch explained.

     Welch goes into further depth about the homicide that took place on september 3rd, 2022. "4 peoplewere injured, and 1 was killed at the scene," explained Welch... "two victims were treated and

released.

            No arrests have been made in this case, and it was a shooting that took place in an apartment

Team Work Between Forces

       HPCAV Robert Martin helps offenders of violent crimes stop their ways. Welch also explainedhow their program has helped HPPDNC.

              The police force points people in the direction of HPCAV. "We have a meeting in the morning anddistribute flyers to the group," explained Welch... "we'll knock on doors and hand out the flyers."

              This keeps folks involved in bringing peace to the community. These flyers hold information onsteps to take to recieve help. According to Welch, "these flyers maintain information on suspects

we are looking for as well."

      HPCAV's team uses tatics to heal the hearts of violent crime offenders. According to Welch HPCAV

is a great resource because they help offenders who need community assistance.

            According to Martin, the offenders have back to back serious offenses, typically are already looking

to be helped.

            "Two guys in the program painted the offices and installed the carpet," Martin stated. This allows

the offenders to feel some type of accomplishment and starts the process of changing their ways.

       HPCAV offender Roy Autry works with this resource to furth change with in himself. According

to Autry, "about 10 to 15 years ago I got placed into the program for a second time."

            According to Autry he stuck with attempting change because he saw what it was doing for others.

     According to the High Point police department recent crime in High Point NC, on October 31st man, died following a car crash on Jamestown Parkway and there was a traffic crash with injuries on October 27th. On October 25th Suspect was charged with murder and kidnapping, and on October 17th Bike Team officers arrest the suspect in a vehicle break-in. According to High Point Enterprise on 11/13/23 there was an assault, and on 11/12/23 there was also an assault. 

    For my story, I am interviewing the lieutenant of cold cases Patrick Welch and he will be going into more detail on the cases his department has experienced. I also have an interview set up with High Point Community Against Violence and they will be giving me more information on how they provide help for the accused of violent crime. I will be visiting the High Point police department every week to schedule more interviews for my next story, and asking Lieutenant Patrick Welch for more contacts in the police department that I can interview for my next stories.

     For my story 4 I will be covering cold cases in High Point NC. I went to the High Point police department yesterday and recieved the email and number of a police officer who I can interview and develop a story with. I am looking to use High Point Police department for my next stories to change angles on my beat. This story will be covered broadcast, and should be around 3:00 minutes long.

    This past week crimes in High Point have ranged from car crashes to homicides. According to High Point police department a man died in Jamestown on October 31st from a car crash. According to the same source on October 25th a man was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping. Their was also a hit and run and a vehicle break in that same week.

HPU The Crime Experience

High Point University’s campus goes through multiple procedures and takes on multiple efforts to keep students safe. 

Chief Director of Campus Police Debra Duncan and the rest of HPU security work hard to respond, prepare, and handle any situation that could occur on HPU’s campus. 

How Often Crime Occurs on High Point’s Campus

HPU's statistics vary from rape, aggravated assault, and burglary. According to the Students Right to Know report 2023, on-campus rapes stayed the same from 2021 to 2022 at a number of 18. However residential facility rapes increased by 4 from 2021 to 2022, with 14 in 2021 and 18 in 2022.

According to the same source, aggravated assaults increased by one in 2021 and 2022 with 3 in 2021 and 4 in 2022. According to that same report in 2022, 6 people were robbed on campus, and 6 in residential facilities.

Interview With Chief Of Security

Chief director of HPU's campus Debra Duncan, holds high value to the process of HPU’s security system. According to Duncan, the first step in reporting a crime is making a phone call to campus security, so they can file a report and handle matters accordingly. According to Duncan, “If it’s something that we can’t solve right away, we’ll send it to our detectives.” 

Once the person or student is identified they will send them to the student conduct, where a school trial occurs. According to Duncan “if they are found guilty they sanction them.” For a different type of crime for example assault, HPU has its own police department to handle the issue. 

According to Duncan “If it’s not High Point owned, or leased High Point police not a part of High Point University handles the issue.”

HPU Experiences A Break-In

High Point University Student Ashlyn Long experienced a potential break into her home firsthand. Long is a Junior at High Point this year, and she lives in off-campus housing. She and her former roommate were tanning on their back porch when a car circled her place. 

“He stopped 3 houses in front of our house, then we looked at each other and she said if he turns around were running inside,” Long explained. “Then he turned on our street, we called security and he took pictures of our backyard.” 

The next day, around 2 a.m., a strange man came up to their door looking to get into their place. Luckily, her place contained cameras. 

According to Long, this break-in made her feel “really scared just because when we watched the video it didn’t seem real.” 

She found out about this man caught on camera around 3 a.m. 

According to Long “If he didn’t notice the camera he definitely would have tried harder, like break a window or something.”

HPU Freshman Experiences Assault

An incoming freshman, who would not like to be named experienced an assault from another student. This survivor had mutual friends with the accused. 

According to the survivor of the assault “The second time I hung out with him he took advantage of me, and didn’t take no for an answer.” 

Out of fear, the survivor didn’t report the assault until two months later. The survivor reported this situation as a Title 9, and the accused then transferred schools. 

HPU Procedure For Safety Of Off-Campus Students

HPU holds high standards to protect students. Off-campus procedures pertain to a security officer being stationed in the area where off-campus students live. According to High Point University's chief of security Debra Duncan, “Every one of the houses is equipped with an alarm system.” 

The issue is that students don’t set them up or use them. “If somebody comes to your house and shakes the door the alarm will go off.” 

Security also uses blue light poles that have cameras in them in case of an emergency. According to Duncan, “every block has a camera.”

            HPU's campus uses many security procedures to provide the most protection possible for students. These procedures include cameras, a gated campus, and constant security checks.

 For my story 3 final draft I am covering a story on crimes committed too HPU students. These crimes range from verbal and physical assault to a break into a student's home. I also interviewed the chief of security, to understand the process of when security is called. I also am looking to interview one more person for my final story before handling in my multimedia piece

My next story 4 will be covering ways to bring the crime rates down in High Point. And how they have decreased within the past couple of years. I will be reaching out to High Point police force to gather statistics and more information. And I am looking to interview police officers and townies.

 Updates on crime going on in High Point. According to WXII high-point violent crimes are down compared to other triad cities. "Stroud says as of Aug. 1, 2023, his department has seen a 5% reduction in violent crimes since August last year. He adds before that, violent crime was down 7% (Davis)." However, according to bestplaces.net compared to the US average in violent crime, High Point has 23.8 compared to 22.7. According to High Point police department "On October 17, 2023 at about 1:40 p.m., High Point Police, High Point Fire Department, and Guilford County EMS were dispatched to US 29 South near Baker Rd for a traffic crash with injuries. When the responding units arrived on scene, they found that a Toyota pickup truck had crossed the median and hit a tractor trailer head on." Also according to High Point police department "On October 16, 2023 at about 1:30 p.m., Bike Team officers patrolling near Fred Alexander Place spotted a parking lot attendant chasing a man. The parking lot attendant said the man had been messing with vehicles in one of the lots. A Bike Team officer chased down the suspect and arrested him near N. Hamilton Street."

    For my story three I am working on diversifying my sources and editing my final product. I am also working on potential ways to add sources for my story 4. This will be through word of mouth, and seeing who on High Point's campus has had any sort of crime encounters. I will then take a broadcast journalism approach and create a video that speaks the story of attempted crimes at High Point University.

 I will be doing a waklet story for my next story, and it will be of top crimes committed at High Point. This story will use data analysis and stats to put together the top 10 crimes committed in High Point. According to fox8 news "A man is facing several charges following a crash-filled police pursuit on Sunday afternoon, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department." Those are the latest crimes committed in High Point, and that is the story that will be covered for my next beat.

    A recent crime reported in High Point this week is according to the High Point police department "On 10/06/2023, at 10:11 p.m. a High Point Police officer on routine patrol

drove up on a crash that had just occurred in the 3500blk of E Martin Luther King Jr Dr." This crash was a fatal one. There was also a Westdale homicide arrest made on October 5th according to the High Point police department.  

    For my next story, I will be covering crimes committed on High Point University campus. This story will be a multimedia cover of what attempted crimes have taken place at our school. I will have interviews set up for once I get back from fall break, and have my draft in on time.

 In my next story, I will cover attempted crimes on the High Point University campus. According to High Point police department news "September 28, 2023, at 2:15 a.m., High Point police responded

to 204 Westdale Dr in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, officers

located the victim, Kristian Tillman-Little (B/M, 27, of High Point) inside the residence, dead

due to multiple gunshot wounds." Also according to the High Point Police Department "– On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, High Point police responded to 1670 W

English Road in reference to a breaking and entering in progress." According to the High Point Police Department "On Monday, September 11, 2023, at 9:20 p.m., a High Point Police Patrol

The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 1200 block of S Main Street on a black Nissan Versa for a

registration violation." 

I will be gathering information on attempted crimes committed on High Point University campus and to students at High Point University. I will take a broadcast journalism approach to this story.

    I recently interviewed two nonprofit organizations on human trafficking. These organizations were love146, and Triad Ladder Of Hope. In these interviews, we talked about signs that people being human trafficked show including; an increase in grades and performance if they were poor students before, tattoos, and brandings of the human trafficker's name or a money bag. It is also a common misconception that human trafficking happens across borders. 

    Recent crime updates entail that according to fox8 "Prosecutors are suggesting that former High Point Police officer Laura Steele spend the next 97 to 121 months in federal prison for conspiring with other members of the Oath Keepers militia group to overturn the 2020 presidential election." According to Fox8 News after a multi-county chase ends, a kidnapping survivor was recovered. According to the High Point department, "The driver ran around the front of the car while clutching something in both hands while the back passenger exited the car while holding a gun in his right hand. Due to the officer’s vigilance and seeing what was occurring, he was already exiting the car, this caught Turner off-guard and he dropped the gun and ran in the other direction."

    Those are the recent updates on crime in High Point, and the recent updates on my beat interviews. The final copy will be done on Wednesday, and I'm planning on interviewing two more nonprofit organizations on Monday.

 I am currently setting up interviews with Tammy Covington, and chief of police Travis Stroud. I am also getting in touch with police of communications Victoria Ruvio, and the non profit organization 1ove146. I am getting in touch with human trafficking survivor Ann Ptak, and Jordan Green writer who covered stories on human trafficking. I am also getting in touch with another non profit organization Sandra Johnson. 

    Updates on crime in High Point involve the following. According to fox8 news High Point triples fines for tampering with utility meters "High Point noticed a 42% uptick in reports of meter meddling and decided to raise the fine in an effort to deal with the problem (Fambro)." Also according to fox8 news A High Point Man was sentenced for 6 to 13 years for sexual assault "Carter’s DNA was a match with the samples from the SANE kit and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Carter was located and arrested the next day, April 9, 2020 (Stamps)."

     The topic I decided to cover for my first beat is human trafficking in High Point North Carolina. According too fox8 news Ashley Green, 36, was just recently charged with human trafficking. She was charged with nine counts of first degree sexual exploitation. And one count of promoting prostitution, and another count of human trafficking. She took pictures of a teenager and promoted commercial sex advertisements, she also had the teenager participate in prostitution. Bringing awareness too human trafficking will be able to help put a stop too it. A lot of human trafficking victims new the person who put them in this situation prior to when it actually happened. They just didn't know the type of person that they really were. According to fox 8 news “North Carolina-funded sexual assault agencies served 368 human trafficking victims from July 2020 to June 2021…60% of offenders were people who were known to the victim and held a position of trust with them such as a coach or a family member (Mikkelson & Bowyer).” Places of large gatherings often also have more ties to human trafficking because people get lost in the crowd, such as the High Point Furniture market. Non profit organizations similar to love146 help assist human trafficking survivors, and try their best to prevent human trafficking from happening by bringing awareness to the situation. North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault also provide direct service providers to help assist survivors and those struggling. I am researching more into whether or not statistics go up with human trafficking during the High Point furniture market by reaching out too Tammy Covington, the president and chief executive of this market. I also will be reaching out too police chief Travis Stroud to get an interview from him. And police communications specialist, Victoria Ruvio. I plan on doing more research with non profit organizations similar to love146, and North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault too interview these organizations on human trafficking.

    

COM beats reporting blog update #2

     This past week a number of crimes have been committed in the area. Ranging from incidents, robberies, and fatalities. According to the high point police department website, on September 1st 2023, EMS were dispatched too interstate 74 in high point due too a head on crash. Andrew Cabel Jones a 21 year old from high point was the operator of the one vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor trailer had contained two people, and neither of them sustained injury. As further investigation is taking place, speed seemed to have played a huge role in the factors of this collision. No impairment is suspected, and no charges are going to be filed at this time. According to the high point police department on August 28th 2023 at 3:00am a crime was committed at the Glass City Smoke Shop, where officers responded to an alarm. Upon arrival the business was broken into, the officers than found one suspect who attempted to flee. There were also two other suspects located at the scene. One suspect Mr. Dakota R. Dockery was charged an arrested with this felony. He was taken before a Guilford County Magistrate and received a 1,000 unsecured bond and was released. The other two suspects were charged with the same charges as Dockery but on juvenile petitions, they were then entered in a NCIC as Runways out of Charlotte. According too high point police department, early in August on the 4th, threat of mass violence was taken to a local business owner. He received this message anonymous through a messaging system. Their were also statements made in this message about mass threat of violence too a religious institution. An investigation was open and the high point police department was able too identify and arrest a suspect in this case. No further information has been released.

COM Beat Reporting Blog Update #1

  This weeks blog post will be important information regarding my beat, which is crime. I will be covering latest news updates, updates on stories I will be covering, and an updates on my sources. While crime has always been an issue throughout the town of high point. Protocols have been put in place to help decrease crime rates. The police department has done this by offering 500$ too anyone who reports information leading to an arrest of a felon in possession of a gun. Little steps like this have cause crime to decrease in 5% in high point this year, and 7% in 2022. According to the article "New High Point Crime Stoppers program designed to seize more illegal guns" written by Tess Bargebuhr. An incident occurred on August 1st 2023, which was an assault with a gun. On 300 block Taylor Avenue, where officers upon arrival discovered a man with a severe gunshot wound. According to the High Point police department "Due to the early investigative process of this case, no additional information will be released at this time." Their was also an armed robbery arrest made on August 21st 2023. The robbery was made at Laurelwood park, where a female victim was approached by two men wearing ski masks. They demanded her wallet and car keys, and then fled the scene with her call and wallet leaving her unharmed. 3 juveniles were arrested with the involvement in the robbery, where two illegally possessed firearms were recovered. According to the High Point police department "All three are currently being held in the Guilford County Juvenile Detention Center on Secure Custody Orders. Due to the age of the offenders, no further information will be released." High Point police officer Robert Tull has received the Hank Snyder Beyond The Call Of Duty Award, on July 10th 2023. He has been apart of the High Point police department since 2014 and was offered the lieutenant position earlier this month. According to the High Point Police department "He now serves as a Patrol Supervisor and is also a member of the High Point Police Department’s SWAT Team. In May, he retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a Master." He has gone above and beyond in the community to serve for High Point. 

Sergeant, serving on missions in Iraq and Syria. He served for 21 years.    The following stories are all follow ups on recent information released by the High Point Police Department. The next following beats will be covered on information revolving High Point University campus, which sources will be High Point campus security, and other online sources. The next stories I will cover in my beat will be the decrease in gun crime, and other ways the community has helped decrease the crime rates around High Point. 

Week 5 Diffusion of Innovations

     Innovation in technology began once the world took a turn, and took a step into the unknown. The moment technology formed people had to get used to having little to no privacy. But before technology how did the diffusion of innovation theory exist. It existed before technology because of newspapers, writing has always been a way to express and spread your values and thinking. Throughout time people have formed different opinions on situations and have learned to spread this through different ways depending on the time period.

    For example a part of diffusion of innovation theory involves political beliefs and values. Since the beginning of our government political parties have been around, the only thing that was different was the way the news spread on what party you wanted to be apart of. According to the article Diffusion of Innovation Theory "It originated in communication to explain how, over time, an idea or product gains momentum and diffuses (or spreads) through a specific population or social system (Wayne)." The political parties grew throughout time, but they have always been around. The way the system is run is pretty much the same just the technological growth is different.

    Political parties formed 1787 during the federal constitution, and have been further developing since. Political parties are the balance of our democracy, they hold values to what the people believe. With in the government system political parties have been and continue to be around. With this the diffusion of innovation theory stands. According to the article Diffusion Of Innovations Theory, Principles, And Practice "Over time through waves of innovations, diffusion changes societies. Sometimes these changes manifest as differences in knowledge (Dearing & Cox)." These changes while not through the actual political parties occur with the different viewpoints formed throughout time. According to the article The politics of policy diffusion "policies in one unit (country, state, city, etc.) are influenced by the policies of other units (Gilardi)." This quote explains that throughout time political parties have changed their views and improved.

    Diffusion of innovation is the process of something over time gaining momentum. This occurred in the way that technology increased the political game. However political parties have been around since the beginning and that is why the diffusion of innovation theory still stands.

     During the research part of the presentation I was able to expand my horizons and learn more about the innovation of different technologies. We rely on our different social networks, so it was really interesting to understand the more deeper aspect of how we as a population grew technologically.

    We use different platforms to see the world around us and peoples view on it. What started as a simple stone tool has increased into what we now call virtual reality. The way it started was by someone simple. using their brain to think outside the box and create something. And then it kept escalating throughout time because people became more self aware of what they are capable of.     Technology has continued to escalate further and now has advancement as far as the virtual reality. The virtual reality headset was created as an advancement to video games. And has increased as time has gone on. Virtual reality has continued to play a role in what are future will look like. 

    These different technological aspects have increased and will continue to do so. With in our presentations we took a more so look into the technology that fell in between these placements, but never touched base on what started and has currently finished it all.

    Tik tok has been an app that has been blowing up the charts lately. This is because of the content it produces it has such a broad base audience that anyone can get reeled in. The creativity behind this app while very smart, can also be very harmful to the human mind.

    The very reason this app can be so harmful is because it makes people's attention spam shorter than what it's supposed to be. An attention spam is the ability to focus on the process or the task at hand. With Tik Tok causing are attention spams to grow shorter and shorter because the videos are thirty seconds long we don't see the harmful side too it. Notice how when you sit to read a book or study, you have to take breaks in between to look at your phone. Well the main reason for this is because everything that occurs in are brain we train it to be there. So once we create the habit of scrolling through quick thirty second videos for long periods of time we aren't able to function at full potential anymore. 

    Tik tok just like other apps also have the ability to show teenagers harmful content that can affect them in the future. They target what they think you might want to see, but an app with that much power can show you whatever it pleases. This app impacts the way teenagers and growing adults think and can be very harmful if not carefully watched over.
